Compromise

Ethics, morals or profit?

I was reading a great piece on modern-day compromise that made me remember some good choices I’ve made as well as some of those bone-headed ideas I decided to put into practice.

While that post applies wonderfully to careers, I see it has potential to touch upon more humane aspects. My post about me being a wannabe grammar nazi comes to mind. Especially some grammar errors I just choose to ignore. Also, despite my utter hatred towards women wearing high heels, I acknowledge that there are times when wearing such shoes is acceptable, even mandatory.

What I mean to say is that there are very little purists out there. Whatever choice you make in life, there’s a part of you that’s going to hate it. Every decision is an equation of an infinite degree, and some factors just need to be factored out. Even the simple choices, because we’re all ignorant towards some things, so we don’t always fully grasp all the implications of our choices.

Passing on a job opportunity can mean less money and more waiting for some things you might want, but it also means you didn’t want to sell your soul. Choosing to play in drop D means your tone will be killer, but your Metallica play-alongs will be over. Choosing to give money to a homeless person might mean you won’t have enough money to pay for the bus fare. I’m sure you have your own favorite example.

A good friend told me once that being a true altruist is not possible because, on some level of consciousness, you’re doing good to others so that good will be done to you later. She also told me that we always do exactly what we want, precisely because we sometimes compromise beforehand.

When you do something, or make a decision to do something, that is what you want, even if that was not your initial desire. Your mind just changed somewhere along the way, and sometimes we decide to compromise. Not to mention that your brain knows what you’re about to decide before you think about said decision.

Well haven’t you heard the news from outer space?
