Romania Love

But what can I change?

Romania is a beautiful country, sometimes. There are many things wrong with it, but then all the nations of this world have their own issues. Some look to great leaders to solve them, others go on strike every fortnight, others cannot even admit they have a problem. We, the Romanian people, keep complaining about our problems. We know we have them, some of us even claim to know exactly what they are.

What’s more, some even give out solutions to the problems. The problem with that is, there’s no one solution to rule them all. No one solution that will fix the other issues indirectly. But that’s always the way they’re presented. Since the people that propose these issues have no real authority, just too much time to think, these ideas — which are not always bad — never get implemented. Again, because they’re not seen as the biggest problem, or greatest solution.

I don’t have any solutions, me. I do have an idea though. Rather than trying to find the one big problem and its solution that will magically make things better, we could try to solve as many of the other, seemingly unimportant, problems as we can. Also, solving the big one first will be hard, as it’s probably tied to all the lesser ones. Solving the little ones first will be easier and, since they are all tied together, solving issues will, or might, get increasingly easy after we knock down a few.

And no, I don’t know where to start, and I don’t care. And no, I’m no expert on this issue, obviously.
But I’m willing to aid you if you have a good idea.

Good Times, Good Times

Today’s Friday.

A horrible Friday that’s come to put an end to the miserable cunt that’s been my week.
I’m not out, having a cold one. I’m not reading. I’m not even coding, per se.

I’m just wasting away, pushing pixels, writing copy, waiting for the FTP overhead, using outdated back ends, and chatting on Skype and facebook in the meantime.

My folks are out of town, but I can’t throw a party because my grandma’s home. Which accounts for the shit-tasteless-undercooked food I’ve been gulping all week. Not that I’d be up for the party, since I’m doing most of my work at home and spending the nine hours at work making sure the code I wrote works while my co-workers struggle franticly to launch the mother of all projects. I help them out with what I can, but I’m too tired to go above and beyond.

Yes, ily, I know. You don’t have to tell me.

And, just as I was writing this, a bitch in a Nissan X-trail just ran over one of my cats. She didn’t kill it, just broke the cat’s neck. So now the cat’s inside, and I’m waiting for it to die. I just got back from a chat with said bitch. Luckily my street ends in a dead end. Since I couldn’t get an “I’m sorry” out of her, and since the fat bitch that was riding bitch was giggling her gynormous ass off, I settled for walking away with my head up high and her side mirror in my hand.

I’m sorry I gave the mirror back to her, and yes, the cat is dead now. Her name was Bella.

Affirmative action

As you might know, the EU will be forcing Microsoft to unbundle MSIE from Windows distributions.

This news brought great joy to the web development community. Finally, the market share will change. Lazy people will have to get off their asses and download a browser of their choosing, and chances are they’ll choose something different from MSIE. Even if they do choose to use Internet Explorer, it’s their choice. It’s no longer forced down their throats. Not that they’d put up much of a fight. Lazy people are bad that way.

Back to the point. Well, not just yet. You might wonder how will people access the internet to get a browser if they don’t have a browser? I don’t care!
Linux users have dealt with this problem already. It’s called software packaging. You get your software — free software, mind you — from repositories. Alternatively, you can download them via the command line using the old built-in wget.
So Windows users will have to either do that, or something like that, or maybe get cd’s with FireFox or Opera or whatever. Maybe the ISP`s could do it for them. Maybe we can go to a friend’s house who already has a browser because they have linux or an older version of Windows. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. And people are addicted to and dependent on the internet nowadays, so there’s both a need and a will. We’ll find a way.

Luckily, the EU has given this issue some thought and they came up with this great solution: bundle FireFox with Windows. They must have been high!

I should rejoyce at hearing this news, but it’s hard.
It’s not that it’s FireFox. It’s the idea. You’re forcing them to unbundle a piece of software, then forcing them to bundle another one? Where’s the point? Seriously. The silver lining is that there’s a chance that both browsers will be installed. This seems somewhat better, but only just. At least this way people have some sort of a choice.

As a web developer, I’ll be very glad about this in the morning. As a half-human being, I’m disgusted.
